Book Review: "Finding Love in Eureka, California" by Angela Ruth Strong

"Finding Love in Eureka, California" is the 5th and last story in the "Resort to Love" series, but is the second story in chronology (There are only four books officially in the series, but Dave's story is in the novella collection "Finding Love on the Oregon Coast"). I really enjoyed this book. At the beginning, I was grinning like a fool over Gen's crush and her interactions with Matt. I ached for them in their heartaches and cried over the choices they made. It felt very real, almost as if I was experiencing it myself, or maybe a close friend. I wish I could go listen to one of Rosie's motivational talks. Some of the other Lake brothers make an appearance, as did Emily Van Arsdale. I love how Sam shows up in all the brothers' stories. Both Matt and Gen grew a lot through the book. It was a good reminder that what we may think of as a curse might not really be one and that how someone's life looks from the outside doesn't always show what they are truly going through. I didn't want to put the book down and stayed up too late reading. I am sad that we won't get to spend anymore time with the Lake family.

Book Review: "Troubled Waters" by Susan May Warren

"Troubled Waters" is the 4th book in the Montana Rescue series. In it we finally get Ian and Sierra's story. Their story has been carried along from the very first book (and the prequel), so it is nice to finally have their story and to find out what actually happened that day that Esme disappeared. The secondary story in this book is once again Pete Brooks and Jess Tagg. It brings things to a head for them and sets it up for their story coming in book 6 of the series. Ian and Seirra are thrown into situations where they only have God to rely on and they do some deep soul searching and changing along the way. There were twists and surprises I didn't see coming and I had a hard time putting the book down. After binge reading Books 2, 3, and 4, plus the prequel in a week, I'm going to be having withdrawals until "Storm Front" comes out in May! There is "Crossover" that is a Montana Rescue novella which would fit before this book, though, so...

Book Review: "If Ever I Would Leave You" by Susan May Warren

"If Ever I Would Leave You" is a prequel to the Montana Rescue series. It fills in the backstory and sets up the events for "Wild Montana Skies". I actually read it between books 3 and 4 and a lot of the things that take place in the prequel are referenced in "Troubled Waters" (book 4) so I think it definitely needs to be read before then. This prequel doesn't have a secondary plot like the other books in the series being just the story of the start of Ian and Sierra's relationship and the disappearance of Esme. In a way, it is more a prologue for "Wild Montana Skies". It does "foreshadow" a few things that are fleshed out in later books so we do meet some of the other people who have major roles throughout the Montana Rescue series. It was well written and a very quick read.

Book Review: "A Matter of Trust" by Susan May Warren

"A Matter of Trust" is the 3rd book in the Montana Rescue series. The books have a continuous flow of story between them, that if you don't read them all in order, you miss part of the story. It does give "fill in" details, but you get so much more of a complete picture if you read all the books. It isn't like some books where the story between the hero and heroine starts and is concluded within the pages of the one book, you get snatches of things throughout the whole series. I think it brings the characters more realism and depth. I like seeing the whole PEAK gang over and over through the series and they become my friends. Although, I was a little disappointed that this book didn't include Sam and Willow (the main plot characters in book 2) until the very end, almost like a cameo. "A Matter of Trust" was primarily Gage Watson and Ella Blair's story, but also Ty Remmington and Brette Arnold as well as a little of Pete and Jess's story continuted. I appreciated that the story wasn't just another "lost in the park" story, but instead involved backcountry skiing/snowboarding. I had to look up a few terms to know what was going on, but it made me look up videos on Youtube and man do they do some amazing, crazy things! The faith element of the book feels natural and seamless, not added artificially. The book pulled me in and I didn't want to stop until the book was finished.

Book Review: "Rescue Me" by Susan May Warren

"Rescue Me" is the 2nd book in the Montana Rescue series. The characters and stories are very intertwined between the stories, so it is best to read the books in order. Like Susan May Warren's other books, this one had a main plot with Sam Brooks and Willow Rose, but also a secondary plot with Pete Brooks and Jess Tagg (albeit not brought to a conclusion). The book was real and open and gripping. I picked up the book and everything else was put on hold. All I wanted to do was read. And then when it was done, to read more. Thankfully there are two more books in the series, with more to come. Faith was woven easily throughout the story. I think the reader as well as the characters in the book learn a great deal from the truths shared.

Book Review: "The Lacemaker" by Laura Frantz

My Thoughts When I heard about this book, it drew my attention. It was about a lacemaker and I haven't heard of many of them. The book drew me in and I didn't want to put it down. The book had quite a few foreign words (French and Welsh) but most were understandable either by it giving a direct translation for it, or through context. It also used old versions of words such as salat (salad), lanthorn (lantern), Kentucke (Kentucky). It made it more "in period" but I was glad I was reading the book on my Kindle as then I could highlight words I didn't understand and see what they meant. A couple of things sort of rubbed me the wrong way a little. They kept saying "Providence" did this or that instead of "God". Maybe that is how they would have referred to it, but it kind of bugged me. Also, at first they kept referring to Thomas Jefferson as "Jeff" and George Washington as "Wash". Did they really call them that? The book was well written and really brought to light the difficulties and dangers that the Patriots faced during the American Revolution.

My Thoughts I love Jennifer Beckstrand's Huckleberry Hill books. Anna and Felty are so cute and funny and you never know what to expect other than Anna's going to get her match made. Sam was very frustrating at times, but he was also sweet and protective. I liked watching the changes that occurred in the characters lives and the way that they were transformed into new people. The book flowed extremely well and it was a very fast read. I was frustrated, and happy, and sad over things in the book as if I was the one experiencing them. I can't wait to read another of Jennifer Beckstrand's books.

I have a very special place in my heart for teachers. My dad was a high school math teacher. My mother taught second grade for over twenty years. My son-in-law taught choir in high school, and my daughter taught seventh-grade science. Another daughter taught American history labs at the university and still another daughter taught classes for a youth summer program.

Elsie Stutzman is a dedicated teacher who was dismissed from her last teaching job in Ohio and is trying to make a fresh start and a good impression in Bonduel, Wisconsin.
