MY THOUGHTS

I have only ever read a short novella by Lisa Phillips in a romance collection, so this is basically my first book I've read by her. I found it engaging and suspenseful and I was never sure what was going on. I didn't figure out who was behind everything until the book revealed it which was a nice change from normal. I liked Jax and seeing him get Kenna to trust him. There were a couple of things that threw me out of the story for a little bit (A picture showed Bradley's parents and 3 brothers and then later it says he was an only child. Kenna swinging a tire iron when her hands weren't working. Someone was called another person's cousin when he was a nephew.) I am glad to know that this is the first book in a new series and I look forward to reading the rest of the series and more from Lisa Phillips.

Book Review: "Kiss The Bride" by Melissa McClone, Robin Lee Hatcher, and Kathryn Springer

"Kiss the Bride" is a collection of 3 novellas previously released as part of the "Year of Wedding" novella series. I had already read the 2nd novella, but not the other two.

"Picture Perfect Love" by Melissa McClone: Jenna Harrison takes the perfect pictures for weddings while nursing a broken heart from her own failed wedding. When her former fiance, Ashton Vance, suddenly shows up after two years, why is it so hard to keep her heart from falling all over again? Will she be willing for a 2nd chance at a picture perfect love?

I liked Jenna and Ashton and felt frustrated for the manipulation that Judge Vance orchestrated. I liked seeing the growth in the characters. It felt like some of the characters' turn arounds/apologies were a little rushed but with it being a novella, there wasn't a lot of time to fit in a more thought out apology. Having the main characters have a past together always makes it easier to believe a romance can blossom in a short of a time that a novella allows. I enjoyed reading this story.

"I Hope You Dance" by Robin Lee Hatcher: Skye Foster is a hopeless romantic and dreams of a cowboy sweeping her off her feet and riding off into the sunset to get married and have a large family. She just hasn't met the cowboy yet. When Grant Nichols comes in for private dance lessons in preparation of a wedding he's a groomsman for, they have an instant attraction for each other. The only problem, Grant is from a large family and doesn't want any kids of his own.

This is a really quick read. If you have read other books in the Kings Meadow series of books, you will notice some familiar people. (I'm sure that also helps with backstory for them as well) I liked Skye and Grant and watching their interactions. The romance moves along really quickly, but as this is a novella, you kind of expect that. The characters themselves even are concerned about how fast it is moving.

"Love on a Deadline" by Kathryn Springer: Mackenzie Davis is back home in Red Leaf temporarily after her father has a  heart attack. What she wants is a big break at the newspaper so she can land her dream job at the big city newspaper. Her boss thinks he has the perfect story for her...the wedding of her high school nemesis, Hollis Channing. Mac could think of only one other person she'd  rather  not see again, Ethan Channing, her high school crush.

I enjoyed Mac and Ethan find their place and what they really needed in life. I was pleasantly surprised to recognize characters from a book I had reviewed two years ago ("A September Bride" from the first 'Year of Weddings' novella series). It doesn't matter if you didn't read it, though, for your enjoyment of this story. This was a cute, quick story. Again, it helps that the characters had a past together for the pace of the romance.

Book Review: "The Beautiful Pretender" by Melanie Dickerson

As Margrave of Thornbeck, Reinhart Stolten is told by the king that he needs to get married. The king even supplied a list of the women he should pick from. Reinhart doesn't know the first thing about how to pick a wife and his friends propose that he invite all ten women to Thornbeck for two weeks so he can get to know them.

Avelina Klein is lady's maid to Lady Dorothea of Plimmwald. When Dorothea is unable to go to Thornbeck as requested by the Margrave of Thornbeck, Avelina is sent in her place. She has two rules: don't get caught as an imposter, and don't let the Margrave pick her for his wife.

Avelina doesn't think that it will be difficult to follow the rules until she meets Reinhart and sees that there is more to him than just the gruff exterior. Even as she tries to promote her new friend Magdelan, she finds herself wishing that she would be able to marry him herself.

As he puts the ladies through a series of "tests" to see their true character, one lady stands out from the rest. What he doesn't realize is that she isn't a lady of noble birth at all. And he might have bigger problems on his hands when a sinister plot is revealed.

I have read all of Melanie Dickerson's books except one (I have it, just haven't had the time to read it) so I had meet Reinhart in "The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest". It was fun to be able to read his story.  I liked the interactions between Reinhart and Avelina. There were times in the story that made me thing of movies I'd watched. The strongest impression was of the movie Ever After with Drew Barrymore and Henri's reaction when he finds out Danielle is a servant. I loved that movie, so it was kind of fun to have that similarity in the book.  There are only so many types of interactions for the medieval time period, but I was glad that the interactions with the "bad guy" weren't of him chasing them through the forest. I felt the book had a nice amount of the characters seeking God.

Melanie Dickerson's books usually are a retelling of a fairy tale. "The Beautiful Pretender" is the Princess and the Pea. Reinhart does have a conversation where he discusses his mother's views on how and where a lady should be able to sleep and the fact that a lady wouldn't be able to sleep if there were a pea under her mattress is mentioned, but there isn't really any peas in the beds.

Book Review: "Love in the Details" by Becky Wade

Holly Morgan broke up with Josh Bowen eight years ago.  She thought she had dealt with the heartache of losing him , but when he comes to town to help plan his best friend's wedding, she isn't prepared for the old feelings to come flooding back.  Josh has had eight months to prepare himself for seeing Holly again and he only has to make it through a month without telling Holly how he feels. Will he make it?

I enjoyed reading "Love in the Details"  I felt like I was holding my breath waiting for Holly and Josh to get back together, even though I knew they were going to (since they were the main characters!).  The characters grew through the book and spoke of following God.  Novellas are fast paced, but nice for reading in a short amount of time.

Book Review: "The Perfect Arrangement" by Katie Ganshert

"The Perfect Arrangement" by Katie Ganshert is a novella in the 2nd "A Year of Weddings Novella" series. Amelia Woods runs a small town florist, which she loves. She's only had one boyfriend and they broke up four years ago. She decides to drive by the church on the day of his wedding to spy on the proceedings. Being distracted, she rear ends another car, owned by handsome wedding guest Nate Gallagher. When Amelia sees something that upsets her about her brother's girlfriend, she sends a frantic email to her best friend, only to accidentally send it to Nate instead.

"The Perfect Arrangement" has a definite "You've Got Mail" feel to it with the hero and heroine writing emails to each other (other than the fact that Amelia and Nate had meet, albeit briefly, before they started emailing). The story was cute and fun and quick to read. There wasn't really any spiritual content, but the story was clean with no physical contact other than holding hands and kissing. I haven't read many of the novellas in this year's series, but I'm glad that I was able to read this one.

"The Perfect Arrangement" is available on Kindle:

Book Review: "The Golden Braid" by Melanie Dickerson

"The Golden Braid" by Melanie Dickerson is a re-telling of the Rapunzel story. It is set in Hagenheim like many of her other stories. "The Golden Braid" actually overlaps her book "The Princess Spy" and you can see some of the action from a different perspective. I love Melanie Dickerson's books and "The Golden Braid" lived up to my expectations. There were some classic elements from the Rapunzel story, with new twists to make this story unique. I enjoyed the characters and stayed up way too late to finish the book. The conflict wasn't just the hero and heroine running through the forest to escape the bad guys, which was also nice.

"The Golden Braid" is available in hardcover:
  • Hardcover: 320 pages
  • Publisher: Thomas Nelson (November 17, 2015)

Book Review: "Submarines, Secrets, & A Daring Rescue" by Robert J. Skead (with Robert A. Skead)

"Submarines, Secrets, & A Daring Rescue" by Robert J. Skead with Robert A. Skead is the 2nd book in the American Revolutionary War Adventures series. Identical twins John and Ambrose Clark are once again called upon to aid the Patriots in their war for independence. They must transport much needed gunpowder. Will they be able to carry out their task safely?

This book gives readers a look into the history of the period during the American Revolutionary War. The interesting chapter titles, varying chapter lengths, and the pictures also help to pull the reader into the story. While the first book was given from John's point of view, this one is from Ambrose's point of view (along with Berty and Lamberton at times). I liked seeing the interactions between the twins. There is action, adventure, and suspense that makes this a book that is hard to put down.

The authors tweaked a few historical details to fit their story, but it is mainly based on actual history. The back of the book includes discussion questions, Historical Characters, a glossary, and Historical letters.

I really enjoyed reading this book (even though I'm not in the target audience) as did my daughter (who is in the target audience). We would recommend it.

This book is available in hardcover:

Book Review: "Willie Out West" by Rhonda Walker

Willie the Walrus really wishes he could go on adventures like his father does, but all he gets to do is hang out around home and play. While watching TV, he gets an invitation from Sheriff Octopus to help the town of Big West be free of the bully Old Walter, the one-eyed whale. Can he save the town?

I read "Willie Out West" by Rhonda Walker to my kids (ages 6, 7, 9, and 11) and they thought it was a cute story. There isn't a reason given as to why Old Walter is a bad guy or why the town is scared of him. Maybe so the readers/listeners can fill in that detail with something that they could relate to. The pictures were colorful but were very tiny (at least on the Kindle we were reading it on) so it was hard to see what was going on, especially with 5 people reading it at once. Willie had to think how to get Old Walter to leave the town alone and the townsfolk all worked together to achieve their goal.

Book Review: "I Hope You Dance" by Robin Lee Hatcher

When Grant Nichols comes in for private dance lessons in preparation of a wedding he's a groomsman for, they have an instant attraction for each other. This is a really quick read. If you have read other books in the Kings Meadow series of books, you will notice some familiar people. The characters themselves even are concerned about how fast it is moving.

"I Hope You Dance" by Robin Lee Hatcher is the July installment for the Year of Weddings Novella Series. I have read some other novellas and books by Robin Lee Hatcher. While none of them were my favorite books, I enjoyed reading them.

I would recommend this novella to those who like clean, Christian stories to read in a short amount of time.

Book Review: "Prison" by Toni V. Lee

Sonja Grey and Max Trent are narcotics detectives and Max always gets on Sonja's nerves, so when their Sergeant pairs them up for an undercover  drug operations, things could get a little tense.  It isn't a normal stake out, either.  It's going down at Sonja's church. Will they get their man without any of the church congregation getting involved, and find a way to express their true feelings for each other?

This was the first book I've read by Toni Lee.  I felt that she did a good job of portraying the African-American culture.  I felt like I was there with Sonja and her "Aunties" at the Prayer Tabernacle.  They made me laugh at their antics.  I felt slightly lost with some of the secondary characters' backstories, but I discovered that they were introduced in a previous book called "Expectations".

I received a free digital copy of this books from booklookbloggers when I requested to review another book.  I wasn't sure if I would like the book,  but why turn down a free book?  Well, it turns out I enjoyed the book quite a bit.  There is some action and suspense thrown in along with the romance. There is no sex in the book, but a couple of the characters had previously had intimate relations before they were Christians. The gospel message is clearly given.

"Prison" is available in paperback:
  • Paperback: 212 pages

Book Review: "A Simple Prayer" by Amy Clipston

Aaron Ebersol left the Amish community 17 years ago. When he gets word that his mom has suffered a stroke, he comes home, but he isn't sure if he will be accepted back into his family and church.  Linda Zook has had a rough childhood, being orphaned at a young age and being raised by her uncle who seems to resent her. Together, can Aaron and Linda find the peace that they are looking for?

I have not read any of the other books in the Hearts of Lancaster Grand Hotel series by Amy Clipston. I did read a novella by her in "An Amish Cradle" that had some of the characters from the series. She does a good job of filling you in on details of the characters' lives, but it would be best to read the books in order. I had a hard time putting the book down and got pulled into the story and reading about Aaron and Linda. I wanted to yell at Solomon for how he made things worse (and truthfully, I did! I was glad no one was around to hear me yelling at my book!) I felt like the characters were realistic and if I went to Paradise, Pennsylvania, I could visit their houses.

There was no violence, sexual content, or swearing in this book. There was mentions of the characters wanting to know God's will and praying and going to church.

I would highly recommend this book.

Book Review: "Never a Bridesmaid" by Janice Thompson

"Never a Bridesmaid" by Janice Thompson is the May novella in the "A Year of Weddings Novella" series.

Mari Hays is excited about her sister's engagement announcement right up until she is told she will be the 5th bridesmaid since she is the shortest.  The Maid of Honor has never been a very focused individual, and it is accentuated once she is supposed to help with the wedding. Mari, the ever organized one, steps in to make sure that her sister gets the wedding of her dreams.

Derrick Richardson is the Best Man and while everyone fawns over him being a right fielder for a professional baseball team, he enjoys just being himself with Mari.

"Never a Bridesmaid" is written in Mari's 1st Person point of view. I have read some books in 1st person POV, but it isn't as usual. I enjoyed Mari and Derrick's interactions and their growing feelings for each other.

This was a cute novella and I would recommend it.

Book Review: "In Tune With Love" by Amy Matayo

"In Tune With Love" by Amy Matayo is the April novella in the "A Year of Weddings Novella" series.

April Quinn is a song writer hoping to make it big even though her family doesn't think much of her "jingles". She is trying to do everything to make her sister's wedding go smoothly even though she qualifies as a Bridezilla, but she is thrown for a loop when her sister mentions that the wedding singer quit four days before the wedding and she replaced him with Jack Vaughn. The Jack Vaughn who stole her song lyrics three years before. When they are forced to be face-to-face, will they find reconciliation?

I haven't ever heard of Amy Matayo, but I'm not sure that I'll read any others of her books if she has any.  I think she is trying to write in a style that is "every day" language, but it comes across more as crude. When April's sister tells her there wouldn't be much to do as the wedding coordinator, she thinks, "not much to do, my butt." The word "crap" is used frequently and the characters often think of how sexy and hot the other person is. While these things might be what you would find on a TV show, I don't really expect them to be in a Christian book. There also wasn't really any spiritual aspect to the characters. There were a few mentions of the characters begging God for something and it was mentioned that the sister went to the church her wedding was held at, but there wasn't really any evidence of it being a part of their life.

I would encourage people to pass on this book.

Book Review: "The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest" by Melanie Dickerson

Set in 1363 Germany, "The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest" by Melanie Dickerson combines the stories of Swan Lake and Robin Hood. Odette Menkels' greatest desire is to help the orphans and poor of Thornbeck. During the day, she teaches the children to read and write. At night, she poaches deer from the Margraves' forest to feed them.

Jorgen Hartman is the new forester for Lord Thornbeck. He is driven to catch the poacher who he believes is the same man who killed his father and to ensure his job is secure.

When Jorgen and Odette first meet at a Midsummer Nights Dance, they are simply two young people attracted to each other with no inclination that they are already at odds with one another.

While Melanie Dickerson's books have been aimed at the Young Adult audience, "The Huntress" is aimed at older readers. I have enjoyed all of her books thus far.  I thoroughly enjoyed Odette and Jorgen. Odette is very beautiful, but doesn't try to use it to her advantage. She only wants to serve and help. Jorgen is handsome and honorable. Besides the romance in the book, there is also a bit of mystery as Jorgen tries to find out who is behind the black market. Partway through the book, I started to get an idea of what was going on, but I still didn't see all the twists that happened. I was happy to see that the danger of the story didn't involve the hero and heroine running away from the bad guy though the forest. There are discussion questions at the back of the book.

I would recommend this book to those who like historical, inspirational, and/or romance books!
