My Thoughts
1. How do you balance writing time with the demands of life/family?
When my children were young it was hard finding time for family, running my business
and writing. The only way I managed was to keep a strict schedule and time block my
calendar. When my youngest was 3 weeks old I had a writing deadline from my
publisher that forced me to just get it done. My mom helped me for 3 weeks to focus on
finishing my book by taking care of my newborn in between feedings. It was a marathon
but with determined focus, and a firm deadline, we made things happen!
2. Was there anything you found interesting while researching the topic?
When researching the topic of mindset there were so many fascinating aspects, it was
like unraveling a long ball of yarn. What I discovered in the process of writing my book
“Unstick Your Mind” is that when we combine neuroscience with the power of God’s
Word, we can truly renew our minds. Science is slowly uncovering the complexities of
the mind through things like brain scans, and it’s confirming how habits, the power of
words and decision making are affected by our mindset. It’s so amazing how God
designed our minds to function and how the good news is we can change our lives by
changing our mind!
3. Do you read much?
I love to listen to books on audio at 1.5 speed so I can get through books much quicker
while driving, in the carpool etc. I aim for at least 1 book a month, sometimes more, and
once I start it's addictive. My playlist is mostly non-fiction but it's hard to take notes, so if
I find a book very useful or enjoyable, I will order the paperback and go through it to
highlight the key areas.
4. What is different about writing non-fiction vs fiction? Would you say one is
easier than the other?
In the past thirteen years of being an author I’ve mostly written non-fiction. So far my
collection is at 10, that ranges from marketing books to women's Christian Living.
However, I’ve always loved movies and storytelling as I spent 15 years as a
professional photographer. My secret desire was always to write fiction and tell stories.
As a matter of fact, I’m working on two sets of children's book series based on
characters my husband and I created as bedtime stories for when our daughter was 7
years old. The fiction genre is a whole other world and I’m learning so much! Personally,
I think writing fiction is much harder because you have so much to think of like story arc,
character development and pacing. I can crank out a non-fiction book in 6 weeks, but
these fiction books are proving a whole new challenge for me, while I love!

More from Mimika
Unstick Your Mind was written from a place of deep pain and frustration. Having experienced anxiety, depression and disillusionment for years, I searched for sound biblical advice to help me get out of my mental rut. What I discovered was a lack of useful content that could help turn my compass toward Christ on my journey to mental wellness. After throwing myself into the world of neuroscience, positive psychology and coaching; I emerged with a fresh perspective and a passionate voice to help fellow Christians navigate the amazing miracle of renewing our mind God’s way. The good news is that you CAN change the way you think and completely overhaul your thinking when you focus on renewing your mind using biblical strategies and neuroscience.
