"My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island" by Carrie Fancett Pagels -- Book Review

About the Book

Journey now to Mackinac Island where...
A Tangled Gilded Age Love Story Unfolds.

Although the Winds of Mackinac Inn has been in her mother’s family for generations, Maude Welling’s father refuses to let her run it without the guidance of a husband. So she seeks to prove her worth and independence by working incognito as a maid at the Grand Hotel.

Undercover journalist Ben Steffan, posing as a wealthy industrialist, pursues a story about impoverished men chasing heiresses at the famed hotel.  While undercover, he becomes attracted to an intriguing maid. By an act of heroism Ben endears himself to the closed-mouthed islanders—including Maude—and he digs deep for his story.

But when scandal threatens, will the growing love between Maude and Ben be scuttled when truths are revealed?

My Thoughts
I enjoyed reading this book. It had some twists I didn't expect that surprised me. I loved the setting for the story on Mackinac Island. Being from Michigan, I've been to the Island a few times and could imagine Maude being there. My great-great-great-great-something grandfather was born on Mackinac Island and told stories of the Native Americans walking by on their way to trade, so I also have a family connection to the Island. I found the book to be well written and easy to read. There was a biblical faith thread that was nice and the characters grew. I look forward to reading more books by Carrie Fancett Pagels.

Hi Becky! Was I surprised to see a review of my Maggie Award winner, and one of my fave books I've written, here instead of the Behind Love's Wall review! I'm so glad you enjoyed Maude's story! It is actually Book 1 in this unofficial series so it's best to read this first. I thought you had, a few years back, when it first released and I got to meet you and your family up at the Straits! Many blessings to you and your family this Thanksgiving!
