Emmaus took the flask back. “I imagine the people being baptized today will soon wonder

where you are.” He tilted his head sideways. “I know you’ve been sleeping rough all night, but you might

want to sort out the condition of your hair and clothes.” He pointed at John’s muddy sandals. “Those too.”

“Baptism? Today?” John glanced down at his wrinkled, grass-stained robe. He sucked in a

deep breath. “To be truthful, I’m ashamed to say I lost track of what day it was. In my indulgent fit of

temper last night, I forgot all about the baptism.”

Emmaus pushed away from the tree. “We’d better hurry, then. Wouldn’t want to disappoint

everyone. Of course, you wouldn’t want to scare them, either. You know, with your wild hair and your,

uh, disheveled appearance.”

John climbed the incline past the Great Theater, heading north to the road running above the

Cayster River. He turned east until he reached a trail leading to the river. At the bottom of the trail, he sat

and leaned back against a tree just above a little inlet that sheltered a small, gravel beach. His eyes grew

heavy as the soothing sound of flowing water lulled him into a deep sleep. After a time, his dreamy

slumber was interrupted by the breathy voices of little children.

About the Author

Kurt is a Christian and a member of a vibrant Christian church on the Big Island of Hawaii. So,
in addition to all the usual temptations writers face, Kurt has to fight off the lure of beautiful
beaches, pounding surf, great weather, and lush golf courses. Can you imagine? 
About nine years ago, Kurt did a study for his church on the Apostle John. If you’ve ever been
obsessed by anything, you’ll understand what happened. Kurt couldn’t stop researching, digging,
diving into the life of John and other first century Christians. Kurt read books by early church
historians who wrote quite a bit more more about the disciples, but they often contradicted each
other. Further, they never really delved into the daily lives and motivations, joys and sorrows of
the first Christians.
Kurt took all of his research and knowledge, all the insights and details he had acquired and
turned it into a series of Christian historical novels based on research and Biblical knowledge.

What can I expect from this study of Ephesians?

I designed Ephesians: Experience God’s Power in response to my personal desire to
understand the instructions that early Christians had. They were taught based on the Old
Testament yet lived in the New Covenant. I wanted to see how the new reflected the old while
also living it out differently. The Ephesians lived forgiven, as we do.
So, I wondered what the application of the Old Testament truths to the New Testament life
looked like, and I realized that I have the opportunity to do just that by reviewing the passages
referenced by each of the epistle writers and compare it to the new instruction they were given
in that letter.
So, here I first sought to understand what Paul was saying to the Ephesians, then what the Old
Testament references meant to the New Testament hearers of the word. Lastly, I found that
there were points that I needed to apply in my own life. So, the study comprises of opening
questions, generally about culture and our relations to it, then the participants read and answer
questions from the text. There are short passages that link to the Ephesians reading and a
couple of questions about how they link and help in understanding the point that Paul was
making. Finally, there are application questions to close out each session.
The style is such to guide the participants rather than tell. So, I hope that each person sees the
connection of the old and new, how one influences the other and leads to spiritual growth and
understanding in each session.

“We jaguars have rings on our tails too, but they are not just for recording our secrets.

They’re for fishing.”

“Fishing?” asked Patch as he cocked his head.

This separation is not just a theological idea; it signifies the spiritual disconnect between our human nature and

with the Creator. Our pre-conversion hatred of God serves as a contrast, highlighting the transformative power of

His love.

At its core, reconciliation signifies restoring a fractured relationship, prominently exemplified by the rift between

humanity and God. This chasm originated with the disobedience of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, ushering

sin into the world and erecting an insurmountable barrier between us and our Creator. Yet, God’s love and mercy

refused to leave us trapped in this state of separation.

In my view, a child doesn’t need a mobile phone until they are of an age to be somewhere
unsupervised, where they need to be able to call their parents if needed (e.g., after an
extracurricular activity). It wasn’t very persuasive to me that other kids owned mobile phones.
(A mother from my parenting classes wrote me, “Your lessons helped us realize that it was ok to
say ‘no’ when other parents would say ‘yes’ or ‘they are just being teens.’ ”)
Our family policy was that we would purchase a cell phone for the child when they began
driving. However, the child was allowed to purchase their own cell phone and pay their share of
service on the family plan anytime from sixth grade onward.
I used a spreadsheet with our children to calculate the cost of a mobile phone. Their sources
of money at a young age included gifts, allowances, and paid chores. We estimated how much
money they spent on things like candy or video games. Then they could see the impact of a
mobile phone. Every one of my children decided to delay the purchase of a cell phone until later;
as I recall, they all waited until eighth grade.

They quickly flew away. The cloaked figure looked at the fireplace to see it still burning

strong and then slowly stood up and yawned, looking at the rotted, cobwebbed shutters

lying broken on the ground. Looking out the window, he notices two large stone figures

holding staffs and wearing crowns, with both hands raised to the heavens, their bearded

faces looking upward, covered in vines and vegetation. Betwixt them was a large stone

altar that he did not notice in the dark. Yawning again, he slowly uncovers his head and

disrobes, revealing a tall, brown-skinned, well-built form, his long black braided locks,

tied in twine, reaching the center of his back. His eyes were sullen and fierce yet full of

wisdom, compassion, and purpose. Lastly, his beard was trimmed short and black. The

man took the water and washed his hands and face, then turning, he bowed his head,

giving thanks for the meal and ate. When his belly was full, he gave his attention to his

staff, which was lying by his sack on the floor. He held it in his hands and closed his

eyes as if to sense something. Then he turned around and walked outside and was

greeted by the dawn of a new day.
