When Your Church Meets in a Multipurpose Building

...there can be drawbacks and benefits. Like in the winter, the back section was very cold and the front was warm. Now that it is warm outside, the back section was hot and the front section was cool!

Last week, Sarah pointed out that at the end of the playing field was a "pool thing" laying on the floor. Well, it turned out that it was an inflatable obstacle course. After church, the kids had a ball playing on it, helped out by the teens.

At the beginning, the teens just carried Emily up because she was too short to climb up the wall. I suggested they help her "climb".

I took a video of the girls going through to show how much fun they had! I didn't think about it, but I shot the video sideways! I especially love the part right after "Big Emily" puts Emily onto the floor.

William has been having a hard time napping lately. I put him in the swing to see if that would help. It did!. . .

Magic Cast On

When I was looking for sock patterns, I ran across a video of Cat Bordhi demonstrating the "Magic Cast on". It was amazing! I used it for my socks and it worked great, so I decided that I would put pictures on my blog to show how it is done. These show using 2 circulars since that is what I did with my socks.


Hold the 2 needles together (for socks, put the longer one on the top as it will be used for the heels later).

Put the yarn between the needles and up over the top.

















Cross the short end over the working yarn in back.



















Wrap yarn around thumb and pointer as if you were doing a long tail cast on.













Now you are going to add the stitches. Each wrap is a cast on stitch.



Bring the yarn coming off the pointer around the bottom of the lower needle and around the front and through the middle between the needles.










Now bring the yarn from the thumb between the needles and around the front and behind the needles. (It is the same motion as you did with the other needle)









Repeat the two wraps until you have enough stitches.





Then wrap the short end over the working yarn in back.











For two at once socks, slide the stitches over and do another set of cast on stitches for the 2nd sock. Make sure that the fronts are on the same side!









Turn the needles clockwise, so that the bottom needle is now on the top. Pull the new bottom needle through to the center of the cable. Start knitting with the other end of the circular needle on top.












Here it shows the front after you've knit across both sides (with both needles)










And here is the back. See the Purl bumps? You can't tell where the cast on is! Cool, huh??

Two at Once, Toe Up, Gusset Heel Socks

I finished my socks!


This is what I did to make them:











Size: Ladies shoe size 7
Gauge: 6.5 st/9 rows = 1 inch
Needle: 2.75 mm (2 circulars, can be different lengths)
Yarn: Lion Brand Magic Stripes (I used 2 skeins just so I could use 1 for each sock, but 1 skein
would probably be enough)
Remember - you change needles or yarn, but never both at once!

Cast on 8 stitches for each sock.

R1 - Needle 1 - Knit across
Needle 2 – Knit across
R2 - Needle 1 - K1, M1, Knit across to last stitch, M1, K1
Needle 2 – K1, M1, Knit across to last stitch, M1, K1


Repeat R1 & R2 until you have 26 stitches on each needle for each sock.

Toe increases are done and now we’re ready for the body of the sock.













Knit around on both needles for 30 rows until sock measures 6” from the toe and the sock reaches the ankle.






























Gusset increases:

R3- Needle 1 – Knit across
Needle 2 – K 1, M1, Knit across to last
stitch, M1, K1
R4- Needle 1 – Knit across
Needle 2 - Knit across
Repeat R3 & R4 until there are 46 stitches on Needle 2 for each sock.

Heel:

• Needle 1 will rest as you knit the heels.
• Do the 1st sock’s heel completely and then do the 2nd sock’s heel.
• Slipped stitches are done purlwise (as if you were going to purl)
• When I SSK, I usually slip the 1st one knitwise and the 2nd one purlwise, then insert left needle into front of both and knit together

You can see the light blue stitches in the middle are the ones I’m working with and the dark blue and white ones on either end are the ones waiting

You should now have 26 stitches on the bottom needle again












Knit around on both needles for 16 rows (or until the sock is as tall as you want)


























Ribbing:

Needle 1 - *Knit 2, Purl 2* across
Needle 2 - *Purl 2, Knit 2* across

Repeat for 8 rows.

Cast off with stretchy cast off.

Gardening Time!

Here is how the garden looks after the end of the season last year.









I used driveway markers (for winter) to mark the boundaries of the garden. Last year, I just used the dead area from the pool, and this year we squared it up.














I had a volunteer crop growing!

We made the garden bigger this year because I didn't have to do it by hand! We got a rototiller last week!

Big Girl Bed

I decided that it was time for Emily to move to her "Big Girl Bed". She only tried to get out once and then didn't try again. She did climb INTO the crib a couple times and got stuck, though! But I figured that she was old enough to have a toddler bed.





Here she is all ready for her first night in her Big Girl Bed.
