Author Interview 

1. Do you set a plot or prefer going wherever an idea takes you?
I used to be a fly by the seat of your pants kind of girl with writing,
I wrote my first two books like that, so a pantser. But I just heard
the other day the term, plantser, and I loved it! Because that is
what I am now. In my current series, an Elemental Series, I was a
pantser with book one, but with books two through four, I came up
with book descriptions, which I’ve NEVER done before. I haven’t
plotted out outlines or anything, but just knowing where the stories
are going is so helpful. So, as I’m going from Point A to Point B, I
have no idea who’s going to say what and what’s going to happen,
so I still get to enjoy the magic on not knowing where my story’s
going.

2. When did it dawn upon you that you wanted to be a writer?
I got my Journalism degree in 2000 (wow that dates me!) and I
knew then that I didn’t want to write short pieces. I absolutely loved
the creative pieces I wrote and I wanted to be much more involved
in the story. I also knew I didn’t want to be involved in the news
business. I’m pretty securely placed in the conservative right-wing
of things, and I found the news likes to sit in the left.
But what really got me wanting to write a novel was when the
Twilight craze came upon us. When I went to look for other books
like it, they all had the spicy stuff in them, which surprised me
because these were Young Adult books. So, I wanted to write
stories youth can read without being worried that body parts would
make their way onto the pages.

3. How long does it usually take you to write a book?
Funny, if you were to ask me this question two months ago, I would
have said at least a year. But I’ve started, for the first time, using a
writing schedule and just in the past two months, I have nearly
completed the first draft of a 100,000 word novel. I feel like such a
legit writer now.

4. Do bits of yourself/friends show up in your characters?
YES! I love memorializing my friends by putting them in my books.
If my friend’s name ends up in my book, it’s not always their
personalities I use, but definitely some of them. I love to include
quirky behavior; it makes my characters that much more real and
tangible.

5. Anything else you'd like to share?
My favorite part of writing which keeps me going as an author, is
when “That Moment” happens. When I’m writing and going along,
not knowing what’s going to happen or who’s going to say what,
and suddenly, that perfect moment forms itself on the page, that
ties everything together. It wasn’t planned, it just was born in your
mind, but you love it like it’s your own flesh and blood. And really, it
is. I know in that moment that God just gifted me with something
precious.

About the Author

Sofia grew up moving constantly. Never in one place more than three years, there was plenty of time to daydream during long car rides. College finally gave her a chance to study what she had always dreamed of doing, writing her stories.

She obtained a B.A. in Journalism, married her handsome husband and had two amazing sons. She’s also the proud mother of a 100-pound red rust Doberman who loves to chase around his sister, a fluffy-not-fat-cat.

A big believer in dreaming big, Sofia loves speaking to youth, encouraging them to find hope no matter what their life looks like. Sofia is a daughter of the Lord first and foremost and finds inspiration with stories like King David and Esther.
