Book Review: "Best Hair Book Ever"

I have two daughters. One likes to do up her hair and the other is content to just leave it as is. I thought that this book would give them ideas of what they could do with their hair. "Best Hair Book Ever" is from the editors of the Faithgirlz and Girls' Life magazines. I expected it to be just different hairstyles, but it is much more than that. The first chapter gives tips on identifying your hair type and how to best care for it. The second chapter talks about facial shape and the best cut to accent your shape. The rest of the book is divided into sections of types of hairstyles: School Hair, Summer Hair, Sporty Hair, Weekend Hair, Party Hair, and Braids. Each section gives five hairstyles with step by step instructions on how to achieve the look. Each chapter also gives a "Hair Candy" craft that you can make to use in your hair.

The girls have enjoyed looking through the book and trying some of the hairstyles. This is the "braid bar" from page 36:

Book Review: "Goodnight Manger" by Laura Sassi

"Goodnight Manger" by Laura Sassi is a cute story for children. It has an interesting font that is big enough for children to read. Some of the words are larger for effect. The book is interesting as it doesn't follow the "Away in a manger no crying He made" line. In this story, Jesus is having a difficult time falling asleep and the animals and visitors try to get Him to fall asleep. I liked the angels being portrayed as men having a party in the sky celebrating Jesus' birth.  The pictures are bright and colorful and easily engage the child in the book. One thing I didn't like was the "Three kings" showing up at the same time as the shepherds as they didn't come for awhile after Jesus was born.

I would recommend this book to those with children

Book Review: "Patriots, Redcoats, & Spies" by Robert J. Skead (with Robert A. Skead)

When John Clark's father is shot by British soldiers, he and his twin brother Ambrose are the only ones who can carry out their father's mission-deliver a message to General George Washington-as fast as possible. With only each other to rely on and the road full of obstacles, will they complete the mission successfully?

"Patriots, Redcoats, & Spies" is the first book in the American Revolutionary War Adventures series written by father-son team, Robert J. and Robert A. Skead and is loosely based on their ancestor Lamberton Clark's story.

I enjoyed reading this story even though it is geared for children aged 8-12. I liked the interactions between the brothers and it was realistic in how brothers would behave. The historical aspect of the book was also intriguing and I liked how it taught children about our nation's history in a fun and entertaining way. It also allows them to see some of the struggles and difficulties that the Patriots faced during the Revolutionary War. The book was suspenseful as you do not know what is going to happen next for John and Ambrose, or whether their father is okay. There are many times through the book that the characters pray or discuss Providence. The end of the book gives a note from the storytellers telling a little more about the Culper Spy Ring, a glossary, historical characters, letters from George Washington, and discussion questions.

I think this would be a great book for either boys or girls aged 8-12. Both of my daughters enjoyed reading the story.

Book Review: "The Beginner's Bible: Jesus Shows God's Love"

"The Beginner's Bible Jesus Shows God's Love" starts with Jesus' birth and goes through His earthly ministry. It does not show His Crucifixion or Resurrection. The first page (telling about Jesus' birth) says "he was going to save us", but the rest of the book only speaks of Jesus telling the people of God's love for them. I was somewhat disappointed that it didn't tell the ultimate way that God showed His love was by sending Jesus to die on the cross to save us from our sins. I didn't think the book covered that at all. It is a nice book, it just skims the surface more than I think it needs to.

Book Review: "The Beginner's Bible Super-Duper Mighty Jumbo Activity Book"

When this activity book is called "Super-Duper Mighty Jumbo" it means it! It is huge. There are 382 pages of activities for kids all dealing with the Bible. I thought that was really awesome. There are activities of all kinds: color by number, dot-to-dot, tracing, bigger/smaller, matching...(pretty much any activity you can think of!)

This activity book will keep the kids busy for quite awhile.

Book Review: "The Beginner's Bible Collector's Edition"

"The Beginner's Bible Collector's Edition" is a boxed set that includes "The Beginner's Bible Timeless Children's Stories" and the complete book animated on DVD and 2 audio CD's. Both the DVD and the CD read the book word for word. The DVD adds animated versions of the book's pictures. There are 48 stories from the Old Testament and 46 stories from the New Testament.

The book has colorful pictures that you would expect from a Beginner's Bible product. The story is easy to read and is a step harder than the "My First I Can Read Beginner's Bible Favorite Stories"

The kids really enjoyed reading the book and watching the DVD (and following along in the book).

The Beginner's Bible Collector's Edition is available in hardcover:
    • Age Range: 4 - 8 years
    • Series: The Beginner's Bible

Book Review: "The Baby Beginner's Bible: Noah"

"The Baby Beginner Bible: Noah" is a very cute board book for babies and toddlers. It has wonderfully colorful pictures that fill the entire page along with a single word that tells about the picture. It tells the story of Noah and the flood using one word a page and the picture. You could expand on the story from the one word it gives. It is a good size for small hands to hold. It is also nice and sturdy.

Book Review: "Bible Story Favorites (I Can Read: The Beginner's Bible) "

"I  Can Read: The Beginner's Bible Favorite Stories" is a collection of 5 "I Can Read" books that are available by themselves as well.

    It contains:

    • Adam and Eve in the Garden
    • Baby Moses and the Princess
    • Joseph and His Brothers
    • Jonah and the Big Fish
    • Jesus Saves the World
The stories are at the "My First" level which "is ideal for sharing with emergent readers". The pages are full of bright and colorful pictures and the simple text makes it ideal for early readers (or reading with younger kids).  The enclosed CD is an audio book narration of the book with page turn signals. This is awesome for the kids to follow along and hear and see the words at the same time. I wish the book had a table of contents so you knew where the stories started without having to flip through the whole book to find it. I also found it odd that they had Joseph sold and he was put in jail. I understand that you don't want to put the accusations he faced, but put something like "They said he did something he didn't do".

    Book Review: "The Beginner's Bible"

"The Beginner's Bible" is written in the New International Reader's Version.  It has 20 full color pages of pictures of Bible stories. The beginning of the Bible has a presentation page, a word about the NIrV Bible, and a "Getting to Know Jesus" Q & A section.  The back of the Bible has a Dictionary and a list of 150 famous Bible stories and where they are found. Each book of the Bible has an introduction and an outline of contents before it.

I really liked the fact that The Beginner's Bible was written in a larger font (12 pt.) to be easier for children to read. I was sort of disappointed that it didn't give any other special helps or extra explanation sections that most Bibles geared for children have.

This Bible is a still a nice Bible for children aged 6-10.

You can get The Beginner Bible in hardcover:

Book Review: "Princess Faith Sticker & Activity Book"

"Princess Faith Sticker & Activity Book" follows Princess Faith and her pet Buttercup Bunny and her garden. There are 16 pages of activities including: maze, coloring, word search, spot the differences, color by number, and others as well as 2 sheets of reusable stickers. The stickers stick to any of the pages and are easily removable and then restick to another place.

While this book is published by Zonderkidz, there was no spiritual content in this activity book. There is a series of books about these sister Princesses called The Princess Parables, but I have not seen or read any of them.

This activity book has nice pictures and a variety of activities to appeal to children in the 4-8 year range. I would recommend it.

Book Review: "The First Easter Ever" Illustrated by Dennis Jones

"The First Easter Ever" tells of Jesus' baptism and Earthly ministry. It shows Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, his arrest, and beatings. It tells how they put Him on the cross to die, but it does not show it other than a partial sideview, so it isn't gruesome for younger children. The book then tells of the burial and resurrection of Jesus. I was disappointed in the line about what happened when the angel came down from heaven. It says, "The soldiers did not know what to do! So they ran!" In Matthew, it says that they trembled from the fear of him [the angel] and became like dead men. The book finishes by telling of Jesus appearing to the disciples, giving the Great Commission, and his ascension into Heaven.

The illustrations are very colorful and cartoon-like. They would be appealing to children. I liked how the book included the earlier parts of Jesus' ministry even though it was called "The First Easter Ever".

I would recommend this book to those who have or work with children.

"The First Easter Ever" is available in paperback (and for $1.99, a pretty good value):

Book Review: "Adventure Bible: Noah's Voyage"

Zonderkidz' Adventure Bible I Can Read series is based on the Adventure Bible and illustrated by David Miles.

"Noah's Voyage" tells the story of Noah. I was glad that it told how God brought the animals to the ark since that is what it says in the Bible. One thing I wondered about, though, was that it said that after the animals and Noah and his family were on the ark "God closed the window tight". In the Bible, it mentions that God closed the door. I like having books that I can let my children read and know that it is teaching truth. It is a Level 2 reader which stands for "Reading with Help-high interest stories for developing readers". The illustrations were beautiful and reminded me of colored pencil pictures. Many of the pages are completely covered with color making the book visually appealing. There was one picture I didn't like as it shows that suddenly the whole side of the ark is covered in windows and the animals have their heads sticking out. This is more the modern rendition of the ark and I didn't like seeing it in the book that followed the Bible otherwise. At the end of the book is a "People in Bible Times" section that tells a little bit more about Noah and a "Did You Know?" section that tells about the size of the ark.

I would recommend this book for those with young children in their lives.

Book Review: "Adventure Bible: Brave Queen Esther"

Zonderkidz' Adventure Bible I Can Read series is based on the Adventure Bible and illustrated by David Miles.

"Brave Queen Esther" tells the story of Esther. It followed the Biblical story but left out some of the aspects of the story such as why King Xerxes was looking for a new queen. It also makes it seem that Esther was the only girl brought to the palace. It also did not say why Esther was in danger if she went to the King. When we read the story, I talked about these portions of the story that the book did not cover.  It is nice to have books that I can let my children read and know that it is teaching truth. It is a Level 2 reader which stands for "Reading with Help-high interest stories for developing readers". The illustrations were beautiful and reminded me of colored pencil pictures. Many of the pages are completely covered with color making the book visually appealing. At the end of the book is a "People of the Bible" section that tells a little bit more about Esther and Mordecai and a "Did You Know?" section that tells about the festival of Purim.

I would recommend this book for those with young children in their lives.

Book Review: "Adventure Bible: Miracles of Jesus"

Zonderkidz' Adventure Bible I Can Read series is based on the Adventure Bible and illustrated by David Miles.

"Miracles of Jesus" tells about some of the miracles of Jesus. It has two chapters. The first tells the story of Jairus' Daughter. This also included the part of the story where the woman touches Jesus' robe. I found it to be Biblically accurate. The other chapter tells of the Feeding of the 5000. It also followed the true story in the Bible. I am glad for stories that I can let my children read and know that it is teaching truth. It is a Level 2 reader which stands for "Reading with Help-high interest stories for developing readers". The illustrations were beautiful and reminded me of colored pencil pictures. Many of the pages are completely covered with color making the book visually appealing. At the end of the book is a "Did you Know?" section that lists some more of the miracles Jesus performs and a "Words to Treasure" section that gives a Bible verse.

I would recommend this book for those with young children in their lives.

Book Review: "An Uncertain Choice" by Jody Hedlund

"An Uncertain Choice" by Jody Hedlund is set in the land of Ashby in the year 1390.

Lady Rosemarie Montfort is a month from her 18th birthday when she'll take her vows and join the convent. It had been four years since her parents' deaths and she found out about the ancient vow they had taken at her birth. Her godfather The Duke of Rivenshire arrives with the news that there is an exception to the Vow. If she were to find true love and marry by midnight of her 18th birthday, she did not have to become a nun. The duke brings along his three most loyal and brave knights to compete for her love, Sir Collin Goodrich, Sir Bennett Windsor, and Sir Derrick Harding. Will Lady Rosemarie find true love or does God truly want her to serve him as a nun?

While Lady Rosemarie tries to figure out the new feelings she is facing, there is also the mystery of the strange illness that is hitting the people of her lands and who is trying to harm the knights. I figured out who she was going to marry and had my suspicions about who was behind the attacks, but there were twists that I didn't expect, either."An Uncertain Choice" is written in first person point of view. Most of it is from Lady Rosemarie's point of view, but there are portions written from the point of view of one of the knights (I'll let you find out which one). Each person's point of view is differentiated with a different font. I had never seen that and found it to be a clever way to not give away too soon whose point of view it was.  I liked the characters and didn't want to put the book down, even though it is listed as "Teen fiction".

I would recommend this book for those who like historical/medieval inspirational romances.

Book Review: "One Thousand Gifts Devotional" by Ann Voskamp

"One Thousand Gifts Devotional" by Ann Voskamp contains 60 devotionals that guide you in finding ways to thank God for the gifts in your life that you may not even see.

Each devotional starts with a verse from the Bible and ends with a prayer. There is also space given for recording thoughts and ways you are experiencing God's gifts in your own life. The back of the book contains a "Count 1.000 ways He loves you" journal with 1,000 lines for you to record the gifts God has granted to you.

I like the concept of the book and the overall principal. I found the book difficult to read, however. It seemed like they were trying to be profound and write in a "deep" manner.  To me, it just ended up being jerky and hard to understand. Some lines I had to re-read several times to get what it was trying to say.

Book Review: "Weird & Wonderful Creations"

"Weird & Wonderful Creations" contains four books in one.

The books (which are also available separately) are:

    1. Spiders, Snakes, Bees, and Bats
    2. Big Bugs, Little Bugs
    3. Sea Creatures
    4. Poisonous, Smelly, and Amazing Plants
I read this book with my children at bedtimes.  We enjoyed the big colorful pictures and interesting facts about the animals and plants in the book.  We learned quite a few new things.  I appreciated that this book is written from a Christian worldview and talks about God creating the animals.  It was refreshing to not have to constantly correct what the book was saying (ie about evolution and etc.)  The book has the main text of the original book, but also little boxes with facts about the animal or plant along the edges of the pages.  It is very good at keeping young readers' attention.  The reading level is listed as "Reading with Help" and the back cover states "CCSS.ELA-Literacy. Rl.2.1-2.10"

I would definitely recommend this book to those with young readers.
