Book Review: 365 Pocket Morning Prayers by David R. Veerman

This book is a cute little book filled with a short prayer for each day of the year. The prayers are not dated, but every 6th and 7th prayer is shorter (both are on the same page) so they are intended for reading on the weekends. The prayers have a title telling what the topic is and a subheading that explains it (for example: A prayer about OPPORTUNITIES: Having the right response). Each ends with a Bible verse. At the bottom of each page next to the page number, it lists the topic (so for my example page, it says 22 / Opportunities) The cover has a really nice feel to it. It reminds me of a Bible cover and feels like suede. I liked this book and its mini devotional prayers to start my day off right.

Book Review: "Restore my Soul: A Coloring Book Devotional Journey"

I have gotten several coloring books for adults and this one is not like any of the other ones I have. I liked that each picture also had a devotional to go along with it. The coloring sheet is on the right hand page and the devotional is on the left. Each devotional has a Bible verse at the top. They all have some sort of prompt of a way to interact with the coloring sheet. Sometimes to pray about something specific as you color, or to write something in a blank area on the coloring page. The coloring pages are a varied lot of things and designs to color. There are even blank pages in the back of the book for you to draw your own designs if you want. The pages are heavier paper than normal books, but they are back to back (a devotional is on the back of each coloring page) so you might want to test the bleeding of whatever you want to color with before working on your picture (unless you don't mind bits of the color showing through on the reverse side).

Temperature Blanket

I have decided to make a temperature blanket next year. The idea is to crochet (or knit) a row each day on a blanket. The color that you use depends on the temperature of the day. Most of the charts have 8 or 9 colors like this one:

(I even found one chart that was geared for warmer areas and the lowest temperature was 45) The problem with having so few colors is you end up with large areas of the same color. I decided to make a chart that had only 5 degrees for each color. I went through my yarn to find ones that would work and then put them in an order that looked good for a temperature scale. 

I attached little tags so I will remember which yarn is for which temperature.

Then I put the skeins into totes for easy access. I obviously won't need all of them at the same time! 

I took pictures of each of the skeins. I then edited and pasted and labeled to make a custom temperature guide.

I decided it would be fun to mark precipitation also. That lead to denoting birthdays, which led to noting holidays as well. So I went through my tatting threads to find colors to crochet along with the color of the day. 

Top row: rain, snow, ice/hail

2nd row: Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter

3rd row: 4th of July (Memorial Day/Veteran's Day), Halloween (orange and black together)

bottom row: Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays

95% of my yarn stash is probably Red Heart Super Saver. Mostly because they sell it at Walmart and we get a discount there. It also comes in a lot of colors. The next highest frequency of yarn types is Bernat Super Value. I tried to use as many of the same type of yarn as possible, but to get the number of colors I needed, I had to add in the others. The Caron baby yarns say they are a size 4/worsted but I think they are on the light worsted side. I'm excited to get started on my blanket! My daughter already asked me to make her one in 2018!

William's 9th Birthday

I usually try and have birthday parties on the Sunday closest to the actual birth date. This year, my parents were going to be gone on a cruise, so I had Will's party on the 6th. We had another family "party" for him on his actual birthday.
