Author Interview
If you could spend the day with anyone (living or dead) who would it be? Why? Even though I’ve spent time with him before, I would spend the day with Jon Foreman. He is the lead singer of my favorite band (Switchfoot.) I would love to hear more of his stories, and chat about life. I run a twitter account called @DailyJonForeman where I get to share quotes from him, and it is really inspiring stuff.
How do you balance writing time with the demands of life/family? You have to be really intentional about how you spend your time. I wear many hats and I’m involved in a lot of different things, so I have to make sure I’m prioritizing what’s most important. I look at each week before it happens and map out the things I’ll be doing. If too much family time is taken away, I will change my schedule when possible. It’s important to have a supportive family that believes in what I’m doing. Everything I do has a cause behind it. But constant intentionality is needed.
How long do you spend researching before beginning a book? I had the idea for my book about four years before I started writing it. Over those years, little by little, I would add notes or research things about my chapter topics to include. When the writing process began, I spent a solid year researching and writing.
Do you read much? I like to think so, but I guess it depends who I’m comparing myself to. For me, I want to really dive into a book and not just fly through it. I try to read one good Christian book every month, in addition to the articles, blogs, and other posts that I read throughout the week.
Anything else you'd like to share? I believe the Christian life is meant to be a journey. Jesus said to believe in Him, but He said to “Follow” Him more. If I’m only searching for God on Sunday or when something bad happens in my life, I’m missing out on the adventure that this walk with God is supposed to be. I want to seek Him in all things, at all times.
